Evidence before repair

A sewer camera inspection helps show what is happening inside the line.

Recurring backups are symptoms. A camera can locate visible defects in the private sewer lateral and help determine whether cleaning, spot repair, trenchless rehabilitation, or replacement deserves a closer look.

What the camera may reveal

Visible conditions help define the next question

A recording is most useful when the defect location and pipe distance are documented clearly.

Root intrusion

Roots may enter through joints or defects. Their location and recurrence matter when choosing between cleaning and repair.

Cracks or separated joints

Visible openings or offsets can allow infiltration, soil entry, roots, or continued movement.

Standing water or a belly

Persistent water can suggest a low section, although depth and pipe slope require professional interpretation.

Deformation or collapse

A missing, crushed, or badly distorted section can prevent a liner from being installed and may require excavation.

What a camera can answer

Location, visible condition, and extent

The recording may show where an obstruction or defect appears, whether damage is limited to one section, and whether the pipe remains open enough for a rehabilitation method. A contractor can combine that evidence with pipe material, depth, access, and site conditions.

What it cannot decide alone

A video is evidence—not a complete construction plan.

A camera may not establish exact depth, soil condition, utility conflicts, or every exterior cause. The repair recommendation should also account for locating, measurements, access, permits, and the surrounding property.

Useful inspection record

Keep the evidence contractors need to compare options.

  • A video copy showing the full accessible private lateral
  • Distance markings or a located surface position for each defect
  • Notes about roots, offsets, cracks, standing water, or collapse
  • Dates of previous cleanings and how quickly symptoms returned
  • Any prior repair recommendation, estimate, or warranty information

Do not choose a permanent repair from one screenshot.

Ask to see the defect in context and understand why the proposed method fits the pipe. Then compare the available repair and replacement paths or learn about trenchless options.
